Data Mashups with Drupal

Michael Caudy 22 August 2010
Type:  BOF session

There are now many tools for rapidly and efficiently bringing large amounts of external data into Drupal, and visualizing different specific combinations of the data - "data mashups" - with Views and other Drupal UI tools.

For example:
Solr and Sphinx can now be combined to effectively index large amounts of data either external or internal to Drupal, which can then be viewed and/or stored in Drupal.
Feeds and feed-related tools, such as PubSubHubBub can be used to bring RSS, Atom, CSV, etc. data into Drupal.
QueryPath and other XPath or XSLT-based tools can be used to process large amounts of external or internal XML or XHTML data in Drupal.
Migrate and other data migration tools can be used to move large amounts of external data into a Drupal system, where they can later be mashed up internally using Views and other Drupal UI tools.

This BoF will include brief (10 minutes or so) presentations by people actually using or developing these tools, with a focus on using them to create data mashups of external or internal data with Drupal.

Using RDF / Semantic Web modules

Lin Clark 22 August 2010
Type:  BOF session

Learn how to add features from Facebook's Open Graph protocol, add additional RDFa metadata to your page with RDF UI, how to use Views to query RDF data on other Web sites with SPARQL Views, and other cool, SemWebby things.

This is a demonstration and Q&A session where you'll see how to use different SemWeb modules to link sites together, pull data from remote datasets, and make data available on the Web of Data.

Modules include:
Open Graph Protocol - Connects your pages to Facebook's graph
RDF UI - Allows you to specify which RDF term to use for each form field on content entry forms.
SPARQL Views - An extension for Views 3 that allows you to query remote data sources.

A code of conduct available for the next DrupalCon?

Gilles Bailleux 21 August 2010
Type:  BOF session

Goals, roles, composition, organization, power and status of local and national Drupal communities: towards a code of conduct for board members

You may have noticed this recent change on the labor market: companies do not recruit Drupalers anymore, they pay Drupal training for their own employees. Why? Simply because there is no more Drupaler available to recruit. And with the near release of Drupal 7, you do not have to be a visionary to predict that Drupal is entering a new era of fierce expansion.

Features, Feeds and OpenLayers at work for an EU-funded project

Andrea Pescetti 19 August 2010
Type:  BOF session

The European Campus project http://europeancampus.eu/ was funded by the European Union in order to provide an attractive and informative entry-point for overseas prospective students who wanted to pursue a Master's Course in Europe. Besides the central website, an outcome of the project was a Drupal Installation profile, the Master's Course Template site, soon to be contributed to Drupal.org and currently used for about 100 sites.

After showing how several modules (including Features, Feeds, OpenLayers, Faceted Search) were used and tweaked for this project, discussion will focus on how to place the installation profile on drupal.org and gradually hand development over to the community.

Drupal for Change: building an open framework for activists

    Campbell Vertesi 17 August 2010
    Type:  BOF session

Non-profit and activist organizations are some of the biggest adopters of Drupal. The integration with CiviCRMand the plethora of tools available for Drupal 6 offer a lot of potential for the platform. We are leading a re-write of the Drupal Activism module, geared towards Drupal 7 - and a lot more openness. Let's talk about what activist organizations really need, what systems they use, and how we can make Drupal 7 the best platform out there for non-profits of all stripes.

We are planning the next generation of Activism functionality for Drupal 7, integrating CiviCRM with functionality that many non-profits could really use. Letters to legislators, online petitions, "tell a friend" campaigns, and more. We are building this as an open framework, that anyone can extend to add more functionality, different CRM systems, and other advanced features.
