This session has 2 goals: 1) Demonstrate how the Open Media modules extend Drupal to allow users to do everything from reserving cameras and studios, submitting broadcast quality video, and rating those videos to determine what airs on TV in several US cities. 2) Describe the some of the steps taken to develop the culture of collaboration that continues to drive the project beyond the initial $380,000 Knight NewsChallenge grant.

A simplistic description of Open Media is using Drupal to turn a TV channel into a community run TiVo where you share the remote with your neighbors. To do this the Open Media Project leverages several popular modules including Organic Groups, Views, Feed API, and Date API. We've also developed a number of our own modules. Some specific to Open Media implementations like om_project, om_show, om_broadcast_sync, and om_timeslot_scheduler. Others are more general like MERCI, Creative Commons, and PBCore. All of the work done for the Open Media Project is hosted on Drupal.org so it can be included in a packaged install profile... a huge improvement to Drupal.org the Open Media Foundation help fund. From funding packaged install profiles, using Project on Drupal.org to manage the project, offering bounties to get more developers involved, and hosting camps... we tried it all. Learn what worked well for us and what didn't and why the project is still moving forward after the grant money was spent.
