How to build Drupal Websites for "normal" clients

Hagen Graf 1 July 2010
Type:  Not planned session

The session will cover examples of creating Drupal websites for "normal" clients.
"normal" in my case means clients:

  • from over 15 countries in Europe
  • with limited budget
  • with a limited time frame
  • with many good ideas
  • with different backgrounds
  • with very different experiences concerning websites and ICT knowledge
  • from small and big companies

What I have seen for now from Drupal 7 is, that everything will be better, faster, easier and more logical and user-friendly.
Unfortunately, for the time being, I cannot use Drupal 7 in productive environments because it is not stable (surely after this conference).
For that reason I will describe my adventures with Drupal 6.

Building Drupal apps just got easier

Mark Brown 1 July 2010

Building Drupal applications on Windows and IIS has always been hard. Well that's about to change. Come see the beta of a brand new product from Microsoft designed to simplify the entire workflow from starting a new project to deployment in a hosted environment, all inside a single tool.

Are you familiar with the Microsoft Web Platform Installer and the integrated Web Applications Gallery? These Microsoft offers made it easy to install and configure Drupal on Windows. But when building, optimizing and deploying Drupal on Windows and IIS it was still difficult. Come see the beta of a brand new product from Microsoft that covers the entire workflow, from pulling down the latest build of Drupal for Windows all the way to deploying it to a hosted environment, all in one place.

How a well prepared baseline can cut development time by 80%

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
Abraham Lincoln

Despite such a wise dictum and lots of personal experience to teach us otherwise, we find continued pressure to dive into projects with little to no planning in efforts to “go faster”.

However the goal we set ourselves was to reduce Drupal development time by 80% and this session is to share the invaluable lessons we have learned in the quest to go much, much faster.

Developers love Drupal for a hundred reasons, not least because it makes you look like a rockstar coder whose answer to any functional request is always 'Yes I can'.

However answer me this honestly, how did the training and handover to the client go ? Did you find yourself apologising or explaining away certain areas or buttons that don't actually do anything - or worse "ah this is actually a developer's feature".

Like me, you may have looked at the admin themes out there as an aftermarket bolt on to improve this - or perhaps you're happy for your clients to use the little black bar?

Creating a generic platform for a national media company : showcase

Cédric Perronnet 29 June 2010
Type:  Session in official program

We propose to show the making-of a generic platform for the french national radio group and its first implementation for the www.franceculture.com website. This is a long term project as we started it two years ago. We'll also present some specific module we developped for this build and architectural generality of the project.

Just after Szeged drupalcon, we won a competition for the building of a generic media platform for the french public national radio group, Radio France. The idea was to have some common basis for all their websites, grouped in a drupal website. Then each of their radio site, or any site they would produce, would be run under this platform.
There was an economical interest for them as well as getting a dedicated team with a good knowledge of this platform.

Get the Search Results You Want!

Peter Wolanin 28 June 2010
Type:  Not planned session

The Apache Solr Search Integration module has many configuration options to allow you to customize what gets searched and how different items of content score relative to each other. This session will show you how the configuration options affect your search index and search results.

The Apache Solr Search Integration can give you great results right away, but have you taken the time to look in depth at its configuration options? Do you understand how changing those setting can provide a better search experience for your users and focus attention on the content you think is most important?

This session will explain the basic concepts behind the different configuration sections in the admin interface and then show the effect of different configuration options on what goes into the search index, and how search results are found and ordered.
