Introducing Drupal

You might have heard about a little laptop called Xo? One Laptop Per Child Australia would like to provide an overview on how they are using Drupal and Civi-CRM for online communications and managing laptop deployments. This talk aims to provide an introduction to how you can utilize Drupal and Civi-CRM for management of non for profit projects.

Drupal.org is undergoing a massive change. It's our home and playground. It's also a public face of Drupal. In this session, some of the team discuss:

• Why Drupal.org needed a redesign
• How the Drupal.org redesign project is also a redevelopment, and the technical challenges we face
• What project management strategies worked, and what didn't, and what we're learning along the way
• Why the Drupal Association had to hire people
• Overview of our contributors

One thing is certain, this is not your typical open source project.

The Views module is one of the most innovative and important Contributed Drupal modules, second in usage only to Drupal core.

Views empowers site administrators to easily create customized listings of content, and has changed the way developers build their modules. In this session, we'll focus on how Views empowers site administrators to build complex listings of content without any programming knowhow.

For any kind of Drupal website, it happens very often that existing modules get you 90% of the way but you still need some customizations to get things looking and working exactly the way you want. Not a brand new module, just some site-specific adaptations that get you to 100% of what you want.

Drupal is leading the way by being the first major CMS to embrace the Semantic Web technologies such as RDF. Restricted to the academic world for many years, these technologies have matured with time up to the point of being used by new standards like Facebook’s Open Graph protocol and major companies like Google, Yahoo!, New York Times, BBC, etc. Over the years, there has been multiple attempts to integrate RDF and Drupal with many contributed modules like Relationship, Semantic Search or FOAF.

“The Drupal way”: a set of behaviours that make you a good community player and that lets you maximize your sites built/kittens killed ratio is one of those things that a lot of people only learn to appreciate the hard way. In this session you’ll play a game that teaches you some of these values, cause some messages will only stick if you've experienced them.

It’s generally accepted that serious games are way more effective tools for providing learning experiences that aim to change the behavior of a group of participants.

Multisite capabilities , have been in Drupal since the Bronze-age (version 4.6). It allows you to run multiple site from one installation of Drupal thus making it possible to share themes, modules and even certain tables. Thanks to this, updating several site only has to be done once.

What I have seen for now from Drupal 7 is, that everything will be better, faster, easier and more logical and user-friendly.
Unfortunately, for the time being, I cannot use Drupal 7 in productive environments because it is not stable (surely after this conference).
For that reason I will describe my adventures with Drupal 6.
